The AI-drafted patient content review kit

A policy template, a 7-point pre-release checklist and a review-log template for patient content that AI helped draft. All of it is on this page.

Last reviewed 2026-10-09

A review aid, not legal advice or an approved policy.

AI drafts need a named reviewer

Teams now use AI to draft discharge instructions, care plans, portal replies and app text. Some states set rules for it. In California, AI messages about a patient's care need a notice unless a licensed provider reviewed them. Texas requires review and a notice. Either way, someone should check each draft before a patient reads it, and the record should show who did.

An AI draft goes to a named reviewer before the patient reads it, and the review log records who reviewed it and when.AI draftNamedreviewerPatientReview log: who and when

Questions

Does a review record meet California's exemption?

It can support it. Whether a given review meets the law is a question for your counsel.

Do you certify AI output?

No. Your reviewers approve each draft, and your policy governs.
