The health document benchmark: how it is built
How we score a sample of public health documents, so organizations can compare their own documents with others of the same type. This page describes the method. Results are published only once the sample is scored and reviewed.

Send a blank template, not a copy with a patient's or member's details.
The sample
Documents that organizations publish openly on their websites, grouped by document type and segment.
- Only publicly posted documents; nothing sent to a member or patient
- No organization is named, and results are reported only for groups large enough that no one organization can be identified
- Each document type is reported with its sample size
How each document is scored
Every document goes through the same HealthLiteracyCopilot assessment our customers use.
- N-PLAT, criterion by criterion
- PEMAT understandability and actionability
- Flesch–Kincaid and SMOG grade for English; SOL, Fernández-Huerta and INFLESZ for Spanish
Review
A sample of scores is checked by a human reviewer before anything is published, and the share of scores they changed is reported with the results.
What is reported
For each document type: the median and range of each score, the most common issues and the sample date. We report what the documents score, not what any organization’s results would be.

Upload one notice, letter or handout. The same assessment engine scores it against N-PLAT, with the reason behind every score. Personal information is redacted first, and you check it.
