- Personalized, story-shaped results. Lab numbers are framed around the person’s own trend and goal, not a reference range alone. Tailored messages tend to be read and remembered more than generic ones (Kreuter; Noar et al. meta-analysis of tailored print).
- Multimedia principles (Mayer). One idea per card, words next to the picture (contiguity), and optional narration the reader controls.
- Language access. Full Spanish version with Spanish narration, not a tagline. Real deployments need qualified human review of the translation (ACA Section 1557).
- Honest “what-if”. The explorer shows direction only. It never predicts a number, so it cannot over-promise.
- Clinical anchors. A1c reflects about 3 months of blood sugar; many adults aim for under 7% (American Diabetes Association); estimated average glucose uses the ADAG formula (28.7 × A1c − 46.7).

COM-B target: Psychological capability (what A1c means), Reflective motivation (progress feedback builds self-efficacy), Physical opportunity (a clear next appointment).
Persona tuned for: “Marisol, 54” — prefers Spanish, reads at about a 5th-grade level, busy caregiver, motivated by family.
How HealthLiteracyCopilot would make it: HealthLiteracyCopilot would build a reviewed lab-results story template and its copy. Any personal values would be filled in by the organization’s own systems, never sent to HealthLiteracyCopilot. The template would be checked with an adapted PEMAT rubric for interactive content and the CDC Clear Communication Index in both languages, the Spanish gets clinical-anchor checks and qualified human sign-off, and simulated Spanish-preferring readers (simulated participants, not patients) probe “What does 7.6 mean?” to find questions for human review.
What a pilot would measure: open and replay rate; comprehension check; next A1c test completed on time; HEDIS Glycemic Status Assessment for Patients with Diabetes (GSD) as the downstream measure. Measures a pilot would track, not results or promised effects.
